Blizzard officially announced Diablo V is in development at BlizzCon 2026. Arriving Spring 2029, the story takes a dark turn where Diablo has already won.
Blizzard made an unexpected reveal during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony: Diablo V is officially in development. With Diablo IV’s release still fresh in our minds, this announcement took the audience by surprise.
The news broke when Blizzard President Johanna Faries took the stage with the development team, unveiling a dark and intense trailer. The trailer transports viewers to a completely changed Sanctuary, set at least a hundred years after the events of Diablo IV.
Diablo V turns the classic series formula upside down. In previous games, the goal was to stop the Lord of Terror before he conquered the world; this time, that battle has already been lost. Diablo has seized Sanctuary and left it in ruins. Players will once again fight to save the world, but now in a fallen realm ruled from Diablo’s own throne.
Blizzard has confirmed that the game is set for release in Spring 2029. This means the project is still in early development, and fans will need to wait a few more years. The company explained that announcing this early was intentional, as they want to involve the community in the development process.
Right after the announcement, the Diablo V: Forging the Next Era panel revealed the first concrete details about the game’s world, classes, and systems. Players will take on the role of the Heir of Westmarch; returning classes include Demon Hunter and Monk, while a brand-new class, Plague Knight, was also introduced. Blizzard confirmed that this installment will feature the largest class roster in the series yet.
The timing is no accident: Diablo V is kicking off the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebrations. That same weekend, Blizzard also announced a new Netflix animated series set in the Diablo universe, signaling that the brand will expand across multiple platforms in the coming years.
