EA surprises fans with the free-to-play Battle Royale mode Battlefield: REDSEC—live now with a shadow-drop release!

Battlefield: REDSEC Launches Today—Free Battle Royale Revealed!

The long-rumored Battlefield: REDSEC Battle Royale mode is officially dropping today (October 28), launching alongside the start of Season 1 for the main game.

  • Mode Name: Battlefield: REDSEC (believed to stand for Redacted Sector).

  • Release Date: Today, October 28 (coinciding with the launch of Battlefield 6's Season 1).

  • Pricing: The mode will be free-to-play and available for download even if you don't own the main game.

Gameplay Reveal Details

While many expected a "shadow-drop" (an unannounced surprise launch), EA/Battlefield Studios confirmed the gameplay reveal just ahead of the launch:

  • Reveal Time: October 28, 6:00 PM (GMT+3) (which is 8:00 AM PT and 3:00 PM UTC).

  • What to Expect: The reveal trailer will showcase Battlefield's signature large-scale battles, vehicle combat, and destructible environments—demonstrating how these core mechanics are reimagined for the Battle Royale genre.

First Details About REDSEC Mode

Leaks and developer updates have highlighted the following features for the new mode:

  • Squad Size: At launch, squads will consist of two or four players (solo mode planned for a future update).

  • Player Count: Each match will feature up to 100 players.

  • Game Modes: In addition to classic Battle Royale, new variants like the mission-based "Gauntlet" mode—where low-scoring squads are eliminated—are rumored to be included.

What do you think about Battlefield: REDSEC launching as a free-to-play experience? Do you believe this move is enough to compete with rivals like Call of Duty: Warzone?
