WoW Forever Update Schedule Revealed: Major Patch Every Four Months

Blizzard plans three major updates per year for World of Warcraft: Forever. We break down why the pace is slower than modern WoW and when to expect the first patch.

WoW Forever Update Schedule Revealed: Major Patch Every Four Months

Blizzard has announced that major updates for World of Warcraft: Forever will roll out approximately every four months. This means players can expect three major content patches each year.

Major Patch Every Four Months

The news comes from WoW Forever's lead game designer, Kris Zierhut. In an interview with IGN, Zierhut explained the new schedule. Compared to modern WoW, this is a noticeably slower pace.

Since Dragonflight, modern WoW has operated on a fast-paced update cycle, with Midnight patches arriving every eight weeks. Some players felt this was rushed and led to more bugs. Zierhut agrees that this tempo made content feel repetitive, highlighting the recent invasions as an example.

Version Major Update Frequency
Modern WoW (Midnight) About every 8 weeks
Season of Discovery (test) Every 8 to 10 weeks
WoW Forever About every 4 months (3 per year)

Why a Slower Pace?

The team first tried a faster update cycle during Season of Discovery, but the results were clear: eight to ten weeks felt too rushed.

But slowing down too much is also a problem. Zierhut says, "Going six or eight months without anything new always feels bad. We know that." He points to Warlords of Draenor, when players waited 13 months for new content. Four months is seen as a middle ground between these extremes.

Will There Be Content Gaps?

Blizzard has a plan for this:

  • Smaller content drops may arrive one or two months before each major patch.
  • Some content will unlock gradually over time.
  • The first major update is expected in spring 2027, with March being the earliest possible date.

This seems like a smart move. Forever is designed as a long-term version, so spending more time on each patch is better than releasing rushed or buggy content.

What is WoW Forever and When Does It Launch?

WoW Forever is a new version that returns to the original Azeroth. Think of it as a refreshed and expanded take on Classic. It will run alongside both Modern WoW and Classic, with the level cap set at 60.

The game launches on November 4, 2026 at 3:00 PM PST. For Europe, that's midnight CET on November 5. No need to buy a separate box, Forever is included with a regular WoW subscription.

Getting Ready for Launch

All you need to access Forever is an active WoW subscription. You can extend your playtime with a World of Warcraft time card. If you want to check out additional content, a Battle.net gift card will come in handy. Visit lotkeys for the latest prices.
