Shrek 2 Remastered leaked ahead of its announcement on the Xbox Store. Discover all the known details about the remaster, including 4K support, photo mode, and online four-player co-op.
Shrek 2 Remastered appeared on the Xbox Store before any official announcement. The store page went live briefly on October 16 and was quickly removed, but the trailer and game details had already spread online.
Gematsu first noticed the unexpected Shrek 2 Remastered page on the Microsoft Store. The page featured cover art, screenshots, and a 52-second announcement trailer. Although Microsoft took the page down quickly, gaming sites had already saved the images and video.
The trailer opens with a joke: neon lights, palm trees, and retro music parodying GTA 6 trailers. Gameplay footage follows, showing the original style faithfully recreated. Shrek, Donkey, Princess Fiona, Gingy, and Puss in Boots all appear in the video.
This wasn’t the first hint. In September, a leaked Steam achievement list also included this remaster alongside games like Kingdom Hearts 4 and Persona 6. The Xbox Store page largely confirmed those rumors.
According to the store description, Aspyr is developing the project. The studio is known for remastering Tomb Raider I-III and Legacy of Kain. Fun fact: Aspyr also released the Mac version of Shrek 2 back in 2004.
Here’s what’s listed as new:
The biggest highlight is online co-op. The original game only supported four-player co-op on the same screen. Now, you’ll be able to team up with friends remotely for more than just a nostalgia trip.
The leaked page listed only Xbox Series X|S. The trailer notes that footage was captured on PC, so a PC version is likely. There’s no official info yet about PlayStation or Nintendo Switch versions.

There was no info about release date or price. Most sites expect an official reveal at the ID@Xbox Showcase on October 20. The event starts at 19:00 CEST. The leak surfacing just days before may hint at a schedule change.
The original Shrek 2 launched in May 2004 alongside the film, published by Activision and developed for consoles by Luxoflux. Players controlled a team of four characters, switching between them throughout each level. Every character had unique abilities.
Critics gave the game average scores, with Metacritic ratings between 70 and 72. However, sales told a different story. Shrek 2, alongside Spider-Man 2, was one of the best-selling games of May and June 2004. While most movie tie-in games are forgotten, Shrek 2’s ongoing popularity makes this remaster less surprising.
If the remaster becomes official, it will be the first Shrek game on consoles since Shrek Forever After in 2010. With Shrek 5 set to hit theaters in June 2027, the timing feels intentional, though there’s no official connection between the two projects.
Since the game is initially listed for Xbox Series X|S, it’s a good idea to top up your Microsoft Store wallet before launch day. You can instantly load your wallet using an Xbox Gift Card. If Aspyr’s remaster joins the Game Pass library, an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership is the easiest way to catch these kinds of surprises. Check lotkeys for current prices.
