Phantom Blade Zero’s console exclusivity period is now official: PS5 only for the first year after launch.
The wuxia-themed action RPG Phantom Blade Zero finally revealed its much-anticipated release date (September 9, 2026) at The Game Awards 2025. But a small note at the end of the trailer made waves in the console community: The game will be playable exclusively on PlayStation 5 for at least 12 months after launch.
This means that even though the game will release on PC at the same time, other consoles (Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2) will have to wait until 2027 to get access.
The latest trailer included a note at the bottom of the screen stating:
"PS5 console exclusive. Also available on PC. Not available on other consoles for at least 12 months after release."
This limited-time exclusive deal was expected, as Phantom Blade Zero is part of Sony Interactive Entertainment's PlayStation China Hero Project initiative.
Release Date: September 9, 2026
First Console Access: PlayStation 5
PC Access: Simultaneous with PS5 (Windows)
Earliest Date for Xbox/Other Consoles: September 9, 2027
This announcement was disappointing for Xbox and Nintendo (including the upcoming Switch 2) gamers who have been eagerly waiting for Phantom Blade Zero with its fast and stylish combat mechanics.
The Wait: If a port is decided, Xbox players will have to wait until at least September 2027 to play.
Previous Examples: This is similar to games like Silent Hill 2 Remake, which launched as a timed console exclusive before coming to other platforms.
Phantom Blade Zero blends Chinese wuxia traditions with a dark, cyberpunk-inspired universe.
Story: Players take on the role of Soul, an elite assassin with only 66 days to live, racing against time to uncover the truth behind his master's murder.
Gameplay: According to developer S-GAME, the game is not a "Soulslike"; instead, it focuses on fast-paced action and combat choreography reminiscent of 1970s Hong Kong martial arts films.
In summary, if you want to play Phantom Blade Zero on console in its first year, you'll need a PS5. PC gamers, on the other hand, can dive into the action from day one.
