Crimson Desert's Switch 2 version has reached a playable stage. Pearl Abyss is aiming for a launch in the first half of 2027.
Crimson Desert, one of the biggest open-world games released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in March 2026, is now making its way to Nintendo Switch 2. Developer Pearl Abyss has shared the first concrete progress update on the project.
In its latest quarterly financial report, Pearl Abyss provided a critical update on the Switch 2 port. According to the company, the game has reached a "playable base level" on Switch 2, and technical reviews are ongoing to ensure performance optimization and compliance with quality standards. The studio is targeting the first half of 2027, but no official release date has been announced.
Pearl Abyss emphasizes that this port is not just a straightforward transfer. The main goal of expanding to this platform is to preserve the game's signature visuals, combat system, and seamless open-world experience.
Unlike many other Unreal Engine 5-based titles, Crimson Desert runs on Pearl Abyss's proprietary BlackSpace Engine, developed specifically for the game. This makes engine optimization within the hardware limits of Switch 2 especially challenging. An independent technical analysis revealed that maintaining a stable 30 fps during boss encounters with many enemies requires aggressive asset management on Switch 2 hardware. Since the system is less powerful than PS5 and Xbox consoles, this port is seen as another "impossible port" example for the current generation.
Pearl Abyss plans to present a session on BlackSpace Engine's development process and offer playable Crimson Desert demos at Gamescom 2026, starting August 26. This will be the first public technical showcase of the engine's broader ambitions; the company also plans to use it in future projects like DokeV.
The Switch 2 port isn't the only development. Pearl Abyss has confirmed that the game's first DLC will arrive at the end of 2026, marking a shift from their previous "no DLC" stance. This change appears linked to quarterly revenue falling 30 percent short of expectations and annual forecasts being cut by over 25 percent. The company describes Crimson Desert not as a one-off project, but as a core IP designed for long-term growth.
Pearl Abyss is targeting the first half of 2027 but has not announced an exact release date.
The game uses a custom-developed BlackSpace Engine, and optimizing performance within the Switch 2's hardware limits, especially for stable framerates in crowded scenes, is a challenging process.
Since March 2026, the game has been available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
