Discover how Normal, Increasing Oni, and Double modes work in Meccha Chameleon, and which group sizes each mode is best for.

Meccha Chameleon: All Game Modes Explained

Meccha Chameleon is a hide-and-seek game that delivers a completely different experience by letting you play the same map in three distinct modes. Developed in a short time by its creators, it became a Steam phenomenon after its June 2026 release, selling millions of copies worldwide.

Quick Overview

You control a white, two-legged character. Hiders blend into the environment by painting their bodies and choosing a pose to stay still, while Seekers try to find everyone before time runs out. All three modes keep this paint-and-hide foundation, but each has unique win conditions and different outcomes when caught.

Normal Mode

This is the classic and default mode. Players are split into Hiders and Seekers, and anyone caught is eliminated from the round. If at least one Hider remains hidden until the timer ends, the Hiders win. The number of Seekers stays the same, so the pressure doesn't increase, making this the easiest mode to read and the best for learning the maps. Ideal for small groups of 2-4 players and newcomers.

Increasing Oni (Infection) Mode

Also called 増え鬼 (growing Seeker) in-game, this mode starts like Normal, but when a Hider is found, they join the Seeker team instead of being eliminated. With each catch, the Seeker group grows and the pressure on the remaining Hiders intensifies. The last Hider standing wins. Near the end, one Hider might face off against five Seekers, making this the most dramatic and entertaining mode to watch. Best for crowded lobbies of 6-10 players.

Double Mode

Double stands out as the most competitive mode. In the first round, everyone hides while one team seeks, then the roles switch in the second round. The team that finds more Hiders or survives longer across both rounds wins. Since roles are swapped, luck is less of a factor, making this the fairest way to determine who’s really the best. Perfect for competitive friend groups of 4-8 players.

Which Mode to Play and When

Mode Best Player Count Key Feature
Normal 2-4 Easiest to learn, great for beginners
Increasing Oni 6-10 Rising tension, last Hider wins
Double 4-8 Fair competition, roles switch

Many groups try all three modes in one session: starting with Normal to warm up, switching to Increasing Oni as the lobby fills up, and then moving to Double when someone wants to prove they're the best.

Hunter Ammo Limit (v2.3.0)

With the v2.3.0 update, an optional feature can be enabled in all three modes: Seekers have limited "ammo". Missing costs one ammo, a successful catch refunds one, and escaping is free. If all Seekers run out of ammo, the Hiders win. You can toggle this feature on or off in the settings menu.

How to Set Up Mode and Room

Only the lobby creator can choose the mode. When you create a room, you set the mode, map, and whether the room is public or private. Players who join an existing lobby must play the selected mode; if you want a different mode, you'll need to set up a new room.
