Rockstar says GTA 6 is more than just a power fantasy. Whether Jason and Lucia’s relationship survives is up to you. Here’s what we know.
Rockstar has revealed that GTA 6’s story goes beyond just money and power. At the heart of the narrative is the relationship between Jason and Lucia, and whether you protect or lose that bond is largely up to you.
This information comes from Edge magazine’s GTA 6 cover story. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, challenges the idea of GTA as simply a “power fantasy” by asking: What if these characters want something more?
According to Nelson, Jason and Lucia start the game wanting to be together and give their relationship another shot. But what happens next is uncertain. As Nelson puts it, as the story unfolds, “the relationship is in your hands, protect it or let it go.”
This is a fresh perspective for the series. GTA has always been about chasing money, cars, and crime. All of that is still here in GTA 6. Vice City and the state of Leonida are packed with heists, cash, and run-ins with the law.
But Jason and Lucia have different priorities. Neither wants to spend their entire life in crime. They’re searching for a better future, and part of that is figuring out what they truly want from each other.
Let’s be clear: the idea of leaving crime is a theme, not a choice. You can’t actually quit your criminal partnership in the game, Jason and Lucia remain partners throughout the main story. What changes is the closeness between them.
According to Edge’s preview, the couple’s closeness is tracked by a four-level system. Your playstyle affects this scale. Spending time together outside of missions increases their bond.
While driving, one character is behind the wheel while the other checks their phone. It’s a small detail, but it makes the relationship feel real. As for marriage, that question remains unanswered, Nelson neither confirmed nor denied it.
GTA 6 introduces a new Criminal Profile system. Instead of tracking how many crimes you commit, it’s about how you behave during those moments. Your profile ranges from “Professional” to “Irredeemable.”
| Behavior | Profile Impact |
|---|---|
| Neutralizing or intimidating enemies | Moves you toward Professional |
| Always shooting first | Moves you toward Violent |
Rockstar has confirmed that your profile will influence the story. Which missions or endings it changes is still unknown. It’s also unclear if it directly affects the relationship.
This isn’t the first time Rockstar has told a personal story, Arthur Morgan’s journey in Red Dead Redemption 2 comes to mind. But giving players control over a relationship in GTA is a new step for the series. We think it’s the right move. When the only goal is making money, the story can start to feel repetitive.
Of course, there’s still a lot we don’t know. How much say we’ll have over Jason and Lucia’s future will become clear once the game launches.
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That’s less than three weeks away. Get your account ready in advance: For PS5, grab a PlayStation Store gift card. For Xbox, pick up an Xbox gift card. Check out the latest prices on lotkeys.
The criminal partnership remains throughout the main story, but the closeness and nature of their relationship can change based on your choices.
It’s unclear. Rob Nelson has neither confirmed nor denied this feature.
