Square Enix revamps the difficulty system for the trilogy finale. Hard Mode is available from the start and Dynamic Mode is back.
In Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Hard Mode will be available right from the beginning of the game. Director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed in an interview with Hardcore Gamer at Tokyo Game Show 2026 that the difficulty system will work differently from Remake and Rebirth.
In Remake and Rebirth, Hard Mode was a post-game challenge unlocked only after finishing the story once. In Revelation, that restriction is gone. According to Hamaguchi, since the game offers a vast endgame experience, the team wanted players to feel the challenge from their very first playthrough.
The second major change is that difficulty no longer comes from artificial restrictions. Hamaguchi says Hard Mode has been "reimagined to fit the new game design." In previous games, the toughest rule in Hard Mode was the item ban, but that rule is not returning.
| Feature | Remake and Rebirth | Revelation |
|---|---|---|
| When is Hard Mode unlocked? | After finishing the story | Available from the start |
| Item usage | Disabled in Hard Mode | No restriction |
| Classic hardcore experience | Hard Mode | Dynamic Mode |
For those who miss the ultimate challenge from Remake and Rebirth, Dynamic Mode is back. This mode scales enemies to your party’s progression and is designed for fully powered teams. So if you loved the "the real test begins after the story" feeling of the old Hard Mode, you’ll find it here.
The removal of the item ban is also tied to the revamped battle system. According to Hamaguchi, co-op abilities and the new FITS system have made gameplay options so broad that banning items no longer fits the experience the team wants to deliver. FITS lets you change party members’ roles and abilities with outfits like Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner.
Veteran fans won’t get bored on their first run. In Rebirth, even Dynamic difficulty was criticized for regular enemies being too easy, Revelation aims to fix that from the start. Players who prefer to focus on the story can still choose easier options.
Revelation launches on all platforms simultaneously. If you’re planning to play on PS5, you can top up your PlayStation Store funds in advance. For PC, grab a Steam Wallet Code. For Switch 2, get a Nintendo eShop Gift Card and be ready for launch day.
