Todd Howard confirms: TES VI is set to return to the beloved "classic Bethesda" formula that fans have been craving.

Elder Scrolls 6 Returns to Its Classic Roots, Breaking Away from Starfield!

The long-awaited announcement that shook the gaming world has finally come straight from Todd Howard. After Starfield’s vast, procedurally generated universe and somewhat “distant” feel, The Elder Scrolls VI (TES VI) marks Bethesda’s return to its roots—back to that legendary classic Bethesda style.

Here are the details behind this exciting decision and what we know about the future of fantasy gaming:

TES VI: A Handcrafted World with a Familiar Soul

Todd Howard explained that while Starfield’s massive scale was an amazing experience, they truly understand what The Elder Scrolls fans have been missing. Instead of building procedural universes, TES VI will focus its technological power on a densely packed, handcrafted map where every corner tells a story.

The 3 Golden Rules of Returning to Classic Style

  • “Go Anywhere You See”: Unlike the planet-to-planet loading screens in Starfield, TES VI will deliver a completely seamless open world. That iconic “see that mountain on the horizon? You can go there” philosophy is coming back stronger than ever.

  • Deep Environmental Storytelling: Those tragic tales told by a note beside two skeletons in a cave—this is at the heart of TES VI. Instead of procedural generation, you’ll feel that unique “Bethesda touch” under every stone.

  • Living Cities and NPCs: Cities won’t be disconnected zones like in Starfield; they’ll be living, breathing parts of the world. NPC daily routines and player interactions will feel much more personal and meaningful, just like in Skyrim and Oblivion.

Map and Atmosphere: Hammerfell or High Rock?

One of the most exciting aspects is the map’s scale. Howard says their goal isn’t to make the world bigger but to make it “denser”.

  • Region: Based on trailers and leaks, it’s almost certain that this time we’ll journey through the scorching deserts of Hammerfell and the steep cliffs of High Rock.

  • Technology: The game will utilize a much more advanced and optimized version of the Creation Engine 2—the foundation set by Starfield.
