EA Sports is removing all paid progression options from College Football 27’s Dynasty and Road to Glory modes after the #CFBPlayDontPay boycott.
EA Sports is removing all paid progression options from the Dynasty and Road to Glory modes in College Football 27. This decision follows intense backlash and boycott calls from players organizing under the #CFBPlayDontPay hashtag.
During early access, EA replaced the previous Coach XP sliders with new paid progression systems called College Football Points and Coach XP Accelerators. This change made progression in the traditionally offline and single-player Dynasty and Road to Glory modes feel noticeably slower compared to earlier games. According to Insider Gaming, leveling up a coach from scratch to max would cost around $100, which is even higher than the base price of the game.
Led by content creators like YouTuber Bordeaux, the #CFBPlayDontPay movement quickly climbed to ninth place on trending lists in the US. On Steam, the game’s user rating dropped to “Mostly Negative” after a flood of critical reviews. EA took a partial step back midweek by restoring the Coach XP sliders in Dynasty mode, but this wasn’t enough to stop the backlash.
On Friday, July 10, EA announced via social media that all paid progression options would be removed from Road to Glory and Online Dynasty with a title update rolling out the morning of July 11. The change is being applied simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. EA admitted that while the system was intended to offer players more options, it did not deliver the expected value.
After the update, College Football Points will no longer be usable in Dynasty and Road to Glory modes, but they can still be spent in other parts of the game. EA recommends players with unused points spend them in these two modes before the update. It’s still unclear whether refunds will be offered for points already purchased.
EA is framing this move as “better communication,” not a full retreat from long-term monetization strategies. Similar systems are expected to continue in upcoming sports titles like Madden 27 and EA UFC 6. After an 11-year break due to name-image-likeness licensing disputes, the series only recently returned, which explains why fans are so sensitive about protecting the trust that’s been carefully rebuilt.
If you want to manage your balance on the platform, you can top up your account without sharing credit card details. Use a PlayStation Store gift card to easily manage your other purchases on your PS5 account.
The update goes live on the morning of July 11 across all platforms at the same time.
This is still unclear. EA has not made a definitive statement yet.
No, this change only affects Dynasty and Road to Glory modes. The existing monetization system in Ultimate Team remains unchanged.
