Sony’s black digital PS5 launches November 19, the same day as GTA VI. Priced at around $348, but only works in Japanese and with a Japan-region PSN account.
Sony has opened pre-orders for the Japan-exclusive PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black model starting October 20, 2026. Priced at around $348 (310 euros, 17,240 TRY) including tax, this console will hit shelves on November 19, 2026, the same day as GTA VI.
The Midnight Black is essentially a black-colored version of the digital-only PS5 that Sony released in Japan in November 2025 at the same price, supporting only the Japanese language. Hardware-wise, it’s identical to the standard digital PS5.

The catch is clear: this console only runs in Japanese and can only be used with a PlayStation Network account registered in Japan. Sony likely wants to prevent exporting and reselling these units, though no official reason has been announced.
The timing is also notable. In 2026, Sony raised PS5 prices in many regions and memory costs have been rising. Japan has become Sony’s test market for more affordable digital models. It’s unclear if this model will be released elsewhere.
Technically yes, but it’s not practical. You can't select any language other than Japanese, and you can’t sign in with your existing Turkish or European PSN account. To use the console, you’ll need to create a new PSN account for the Japan region.
For players living in Japan or already using a Japanese PSN account, the easiest way to top up your PlayStation Store funds is with a JPY PlayStation Store gift card. For other regions, check out the PlayStation Store gift card options.
Sony’s move toward digital isn’t limited to this model. The company announced that it will stop producing physical PS5 game discs starting January 2028. Existing disc-based games will still work, but all new releases will be digital-only. This explains why disc-less models are becoming more prominent.
The console launches in Japan on November 19, 2026. Pre-orders start October 20.
For now, Sony has only announced the Japan release. No news for other regions.
