Gamescom and Future Games Show spotlighted a wave of new animal-themed and anthropomorphic games this week.
This week at Gamescom Opening Night Live and the Future Games Show, so many anthropomorphic animal characters took center stage that even publishers couldn’t help but notice the trend. If you love controlling non-human heroes, this week was a true feast for you.
A studio formed by developers who previously worked on Halo and Battlefield announced a new shooter where players control plush toy-like anthropomorphic dogs. Gravhounds is a four-player co-op action builder game about dogs trying to find their way home. Players defend their bases and gather resources while fending off enemies, even using gravity itself as a weapon.
One of the standout titles of the night was Zookpunk. Centered around anthropomorphic animals, the game impressed with its third-person action gameplay and striking visuals. It’s yet another example of how seriously Chinese studios are taking game development.
On the Future Games Show side, Sword Sage: Awakening caught attention. Inspired by Chinese mythology, this action RPG features an adorable red panda companion, and the new trailer gave a closer look at its fast-paced combat system.
Among the Future Games Show world premieres, DNA Nemesis is a third-person sci-fi shooter with animal-headed heroes. The game is coming to PC in December 2026.
HoYoverse announced a project completely different from its usual anime gacha formula: Petit Planet. This title invites players to farm, fish, and craft on a new planet with three anthropomorphic characters working for the fictional Loomi Co. It delivers a life simulation experience in the style of Animal Crossing. Set to launch in winter 2026 for iOS, Android, Windows, and Epic Games Store, another beta test is planned.
From the creators of The Binding of Isaac, the cat-breeding tactics game Mewgenics launched on PC in February and is now coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Players tactically breed cats and send them on challenging turn-based adventures, with genetic traits managed across generations as a core gameplay mechanic.
This doesn’t seem like a coincidence. Anthropomorphic characters offer developers a visually memorable design language that crosses cultural boundaries and can be easily adapted to various genres (shooter, RPG, life sim, tactics). The surge this week shows that even major studios recognize the commercial potential of this formula.
No exact date has been announced yet, but the game is planned to launch within this year.
The game is coming exclusively to PC in December 2026.
Following its PC release in February 2026, the game will also be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
