Rockstar reveals the details behind GTA 6’s combat system. Discover Focus ability, heavy weapons, cover mechanics, and non-lethal options, all in one place.
GTA 6’s combat system takes a slower, heavier, and more tactical approach compared to previous games in the series. Rockstar’s official Extended Look showcase on August 27 and insights from Rockstar North executives provide a clear picture ahead of the November 19 release.
The most notable change is the aiming system. According to content creators who previewed the game, auto-aim is off by default. Instead, there’s a customizable free aim mode with light aim assist.
Focus in GTA 6 is similar to Dead Eye in Red Dead Redemption 2. When activated, time slows down and you can mark targets: red zones are lethal, yellow zones indicate disabling shots. It’s limited by a purple bar on your HUD, and slow motion ends when it’s depleted.
Focus isn’t just for combat. It lets you spot police through walls and mark car engines, fuel tanks, and tires. Since police no longer appear on the minimap, this feature is crucial for escapes.
| Feature | In GTA 6 |
|---|---|
| Cover | You can lean out and shoot from cover using a dedicated button |
| Crouch | Independent from cover, allows for lateral movement during fights |
| Shoulder switch | Returns from Red Dead Redemption 2 |
| Melee | According to previews, Jason uses street fighting while Lucia fights with kickboxing and MMA moves |
According to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, GTA 6 introduces more non-lethal options. You can shoot weapons out of enemies’ hands or disable them by targeting arms and legs. Warning shots force enemies into cover, and some NPCs will flee when they see a weapon.
These choices are reflected in the new Criminal Profile system. As Rockstar puts it, there’s no “right way” to play; your profile ranges from professional to psychopath based on your playstyle.
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. To pre-order digitally or top up your account for release day, you can use a PlayStation Store gift card for PS5 or an Xbox gift card for Xbox.
