Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is making history as the first game in the legendary strategy series to enter the world of virtual reality. However, the Civilization VII VR edition will be exclusive to Meta headsets.
Before the official release of Civilization VII, Firaxis and 2K surprised fans by unveiling the VR version of the game. Officially named Sid Meier's Civilization 7 VR, the game was announced on February 8th during the Civ World Summit event. Unfortunately for fans using other VR devices, the first Civilization game designed for virtual reality will only be available on Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets.
Civilization VII VR is Exclusive to Meta Headsets
The VR adaptation of Civilization 7 is being developed by PlaySide Studios, an Australian-based team known for their expertise in virtual reality. The game will take advantage of the front cameras on the Meta Quest 3 headset series to deliver a mixed reality (MR) experience. Players will see a diorama-like command table that adapts to their field of vision, creating an immersive and strategic gameplay environment.
Staying true to its roots, Civilization VII VR will allow players to seamlessly switch between VR and MR perspectives in real time, enhancing strategic decision-making. Another standout feature is The Archives, where players can view detailed dioramas showcasing their in-game achievements, accessible in both MR and VR modes.
Civilization 7 VR Release Date and Features
The Civilization 7 VR Edition is set to launch in Spring 2025. Firaxis aims to deliver an experience that mirrors the PC and console versions, ensuring that even in VR, players can enjoy deep strategic gameplay. Additionally, the game will feature an online multiplayer mode, allowing players to challenge others in a fully immersive virtual world.
With its exclusive Meta Quest 3 compatibility, diorama-style gameplay, and real-time MR/VR transitions, Civilization VII VR promises to be a revolutionary addition to the franchise. As we approach the release, fans eagerly await more details on how Civilization’s turn-based strategy will translate into a fully interactive VR experience.
