The Most Controversial COD Item Makes a Comeback in Modern Warfare 4

The Most Controversial COD Item Makes a Comeback in Modern Warfare 4

One of Call of Duty's most debated items, the Riot Shield—loved by few, ignored by none—returns in Modern Warfare 4. This time, Infinity Ward has made significant changes to how it works.

Why Is the Riot Shield So Controversial

Introduced in Modern Warfare 2 back in 2009, the Riot Shield has appeared in nearly every Infinity Ward-developed Call of Duty title except Infinite Warfare. Its controversy stems from a tactic called "turtling," where players would use the Overkill perk to equip two primary weapons and wear the Riot Shield on their back, automatically blocking shots from behind. This created a defensive, sometimes frustrating playstyle for others. After being absent in Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, and despite many hoping it was gone for good, the Riot Shield is back in MW4.

What's Different This Time

Instead of removing the item, Infinity Ward has completely reworked it. The new Riot Shield now features:

  • Breakable: The shield no longer offers infinite protection; it can be destroyed after taking enough damage.
  • Deployable: Players can place the shield anywhere, creating their own cover.
  • No longer occupies a weapon slot: Unlike previous versions, it is now a field upgrade, so it doesn't take up your primary weapon slot.
  • New attack option: A powerful melee attack has been added, knocking down enemies at close range and creating space.

Activision summarizes the new purpose: "When equipped, the shield provides frontal protection while advancing or holding a position. It can also be used offensively thanks to a heavy melee attack that knocks down enemies and opens up space."

The Riot Shield Isn't the Only Change

MW4's multiplayer brings even bigger changes: a new weapon system called Ballistic Authority eliminates hipfire bloom, meaning bullets go exactly where you aim. Redesigned recoil patterns also come into play. The game launches with 12 core 6v6 maps, dedicated Gunfight arenas, and large-scale Big War maps for vehicle and infantry battles. The Kill Block mode will also be available at launch.
