Nintendo Unveils First Gameplay and Release Date for Ocarina of Time Remake

After months of anticipation, Nintendo has finally shared concrete details about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's Switch 2 remake. The game took center stage at the Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, where a lengthy gameplay reveal and an official release date were announced.

Release Date: November 5

The game was first teased during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct with a brief trailer and a general "2026" release window. Since then, Nintendo had kept details under wraps. Now, the date is set: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026. This timing is notable, coming just two weeks before the massive launch of GTA 6 on November 19. However, GTA 6 is not coming to Switch 2, and two weeks should be plenty of time to dive into this N64 classic.

What’s New in Gameplay

The presentation offered an in-depth look at visuals, combat, movement, and several updated mechanics. Key changes include:

  • Jump button added: In the original N64 version, Link would automatically jump at edges. In the remake, players can now jump manually with a dedicated button—a fan-requested change for 28 years.
  • Fully voiced cutscenes: All characters now feature full voice acting during cutscenes.
  • Redesigned Link outfit: Young Link’s costume has been reimagined to look as if it’s crafted from leaves and natural materials found in Kokiri Forest.
  • Switch 2 microphone support: Players can now hum ocarina melodies using the built-in Switch 2 microphone, in addition to traditional button inputs.

Scenes Showcased

The trailer journeyed from Young Link exploring Kokiri Forest in the opening sequence to his entrance into the first dungeon, the Great Deku Tree. Navi, Link’s fairy companion, returns to offer tips on enemies and points of interest. The footage also transitioned into Hyrule Field, showing distant Death Mountain, the interior of Hyrule Castle, and the lively townsfolk. A memorable moment featured Link playing his ocarina and meeting his beloved pony, Epona.

This Is the Second Remake

Originally released for Nintendo 64 in 1998, Ocarina of Time still holds the title of highest-rated game ever with a 99 Metascore. It was previously remade as Ocarina of Time 3D for Nintendo 3DS in 2011, and has also been available via Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo Switch Online. However, this new version stands as Nintendo’s first full-scale remake, rebuilt entirely from the ground up.

Nintendo’s Fall-Winter Lineup Is Set

With the Ocarina of Time release date confirmed, Nintendo’s roadmap for the rest of the year is clear. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave arrives next week, followed by Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, and finally Ocarina of Time. Of these, Ocarina of Time is expected to be the standout title and the top-selling Nintendo game of the year.
