Microsoft Announces Major Update to Xbox Cloud Gaming Limits

Gaming News
04.09.2026

The era of unlimited cloud gaming for Xbox Game Pass subscribers ends this November. Discover everything about the new monthly limits—ranging from 5 to 15 hours by tier—and how to buy extra playtime.

Microsoft Announces Major Update to Xbox Cloud Gaming Limits

The era of unlimited cloud gaming for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, available since 2020, is coming to an end this November. Microsoft has officially announced the introduction of monthly usage limits for Xbox Cloud Gaming.

What are the new limits?

According to the official Xbox blog, the changes will introduce different monthly hour caps depending on your Game Pass subscription tier:

Tier Monthly Cloud Gaming Hours
Game Pass Ultimate 15 hours
Game Pass Premium 10 hours
Game Pass Essential 5 hours

Xbox states that this change will currently affect only 4 percent of subscribers who use unlimited streaming. However, it could be a significant limitation for players who heavily depend on cloud gaming, especially on mobile devices or older hardware.

What happens if you exceed the limit?

Once you use up your monthly quota, you’ll be able to purchase additional cloud gaming hours via the Xbox Store. Microsoft hasn’t announced pricing for extra hours yet, but more details are expected in October. Another key change: even without an active Game Pass subscription, you’ll be able to buy playtime and access cloud gaming directly. For example, players with an older Xbox One will be able to purchase cloud playtime and enjoy the latest Xbox Series X|S titles on their device.

Why is Microsoft making this change?

The company attributes this decision to the rising computational costs as the cloud gaming service scales up. In the official Xbox statement: "We’re introducing this model because the cost of delivering cloud gaming increases as more people use the service and play for longer periods." Microsoft acknowledges that while these monthly limits will help them continue investing in reliability and performance, it may mean higher costs for some players.

Why now?

This move is part of Microsoft’s broader shift toward usage-based pricing across its services. Executives are developing similar models for various products to better reflect increasing costs. It’s also the latest in a series of changes for Xbox this year. Under new CEO Asha Sharma, who took office in February, the company saw a wave of 3,000 layoffs, spun off five internal studios, reduced Game Pass prices after a previous hike, and yet raised Xbox console prices again last month. Microsoft also recently announced a new program allowing players to convert their physical discs into digital versions.

If you rarely use cloud gaming, don’t worry

These changes won’t affect players who download and play games directly on their consoles or PCs. The new limits only apply to cloud streaming sessions. So if you play as usual on your console, the November update won’t impact you.
