Nintendo’s latest 4.0.0 update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe adds eight-player split screen, CameraPlay, and more on Switch 2.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Now Supports Eight-Player Split Screen on Switch 2

Nintendo has rolled out a massive update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, one of the series’ best-selling titles since its 2017 release. With version 4.0.0, launched on September 1, the split screen limit is now doubled exclusively for Switch 2 players.

How Does Eight-Player Split Screen Work?

Previously, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe allowed up to four players on a single console. Now, with Switch 2, you can race with up to eight players. To enjoy this feature, simply connect up to seven Nintendo Switch controllers (Joy-Con or Pro Controller) to your system. For a full eight-player experience, you’ll need at least one Joy-Con 2 or a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. It might be time to dig out those old Joy-Cons from your drawer.

Show Your Face with CameraPlay

The update also introduces CameraPlay. By connecting a USB camera compatible with Switch 2 (sold separately), players can see their faces on screen during races. This feature can be toggled on or off in both local multiplayer and online modes for 2-4 players. Online, the camera only works during GameChat sessions, and both video and microphone are shared only with GameChat members.

Visual and Performance Upgrades

Switch 2 players now benefit from support for high-resolution displays and TVs, making visuals crisper than ever. Loading times before races and battles have also been reduced. Additionally, all players will notice a slight speed boost equivalent to a coin, and racers using the Boo item to turn invisible will no longer slow down when going off-track.

Endurance Mode: 96 Races

For those with the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass, there’s a new option in the "VS Race" rules: 96 Races. This marathon mode covers all 96 tracks from the base game and the six-wave, 48-track DLC, offering a true challenge for completionists.

Nintendo’s Update Strategy

This isn’t the only update Nintendo released this week; Pikmin 3 Deluxe received a similar Switch 2 update. Clearly, Nintendo is gradually enhancing its classic Switch titles to leverage the power of Switch 2 hardware.
