Corrupted Blood Returns in World of Warcraft

Gaming News

A new bug escaping from the Brackenhide Hollow dungeon in World of Warcraft has brought back a mini version of the legendary 2005 Corrupted Blood outbreak.

Corrupted Blood Returns in World of Warcraft

A bug that appeared in World of Warcraft before July 3, 2026, triggered a mini repeat of one of the most legendary events in the game's history. The Withering Contagion debuff spread beyond the Brackenhide Hollow dungeon, infecting players across Azeroth.

What Happened?

Due to a glitch, the Withering Contagion debuff escaped the dungeon and caused affected players to explode with a green, disgusting liquid. According to one player, the debuff dealt 23,360 nature damage each time it was triggered—enough to instantly kill a low-level character. Blizzard fixed the issue within hours with a hotfix, so players didn’t have to spend the July 4th weekend quarantined in Azeroth.

The Original 2005 Event: Corrupted Blood

This bug was quickly dubbed "Corrupted Blood 2.0" as a nod to the legendary 2005 incident. Back then, the Corrupted Blood debuff from Hakkar the Soulflayer in the Zul'Gurub raid spread outside the dungeon due to a programming oversight. Players teleported home while still infected and later summoned their battle pets, which helped the disease spread rapidly through crowded cities. The outbreak even infected immortal NPCs, lasted for weeks, affected millions of characters, and was studied by real-world epidemiologists. The event has its own Wikipedia page and was even referenced in COVID-19 research.

Why Was It Fixed So Fast This Time?

Back in 2005, it took Blizzard weeks to fix the original Corrupted Blood incident, and they eventually had to roll back the servers. In contrast, Withering Contagion was hotfixed within hours, showing how much faster Blizzard can respond today and how much more contained this event was compared to the original.

The Lasting Legacy of Corrupted Blood

The original event left a mark far beyond WoW itself. The Rakghoul Plague in Star Wars: The Old Republic was inspired by it, Blizzard immortalized the event with a Hearthstone card, and it was referenced again during the Scourge invasion in the 2020 Shadowlands expansion. Corrupted Blood continues to be one of the most talked-about moments in MMO history.
