PS5 gets the 14.20 firmware update. All about GTA 6's 14.10 requirement, PSN restrictions, and the latest jailbreak developments.
On October 21, 2026, Sony released a new system update for both PS5 and PS5 Pro, version 26.07-14.20.00. This update landed less than a month before GTA 6’s release, right as the jailbreak scene is gaining momentum.
According to Sony’s official notes, the update brings improvements to notifications and enhances user experience on certain screens. There are no new features or explicitly stated security fixes. The file size is about 1.2 GB, according to MP1st.
Even with such a minimal patch note, it’s natural for users to have questions. Every Sony update in the past two months has directly or indirectly impacted jailbreak efforts.
| Date | Development |
|---|---|
| September 16 | Firmware 14.00 was released, closing a hypervisor vulnerability used at the time |
| October 1 | Firmware 14.10 rolled out with security fixes |
| Mid-October | Sony made 14.10 or higher mandatory for PSN login |
| October 19 | Developer Gezine shared a video showing kernel-level access on 14.10 |
| October 21 | Firmware 14.20 released |
Gezine’s claim has not been independently verified, and the method has not been shared. The developer hinted that the vulnerability might first be reported through a bug bounty program. Sony has not commented on the matter.
According to data mining by PlayStation Game Size, the PS5 version of GTA 6 will require at least firmware 14.10 at launch on November 19. This information hasn’t been officially confirmed by Sony or Rockstar. If true, modded consoles running older firmware won’t be able to play the game.
No direct connection between the 14.20 update and GTA 6 has been announced. Still, the timing is hardly a coincidence: tightening up the system before the year’s biggest release is an expected move from Sony.
If you haven’t jailbroken your console, all you need to do is install the update. The latest firmware is required for both PSN access and new games like GTA 6.
