PlayStation Exclusives Are Heading Back to the Console!

Sony ends its PC experiment for PlayStation exclusives.

PlayStation Exclusives Are Heading Back to the Console!

The gaming world is in for a shake-up! Sony’s strategy of bringing PlayStation blockbusters to PC, which started in 2020, is coming to a major halt by March 2026. According to Bloomberg and industry insider Jason Schreier, Sony will no longer release its major single-player titles on PC.

Sony’s Bold Move: No More PS5 Exclusives on PC!

Sony is shelving its multi-platform policy of the last six years due to lower-than-expected sales and the desire to protect its console ecosystem. The company is refocusing on its “Prestige Console” identity.

Why the Change? (Key Factors)

There are three main reasons behind Sony’s sharp pivot:

  1. Sales Performance: Blockbusters like God of War and Spider-Man didn’t achieve the same massive success on PC as they did on console. For example, Spider-Man 2 on Steam reached only half the concurrent players of the first game.

  2. Brand Value Protection: Sony concluded that bringing exclusives to PC weakened the “must-have” image of the PS5 and threatened hardware sales for both PS5 and the upcoming PS6.

  3. Ecosystem Revenue: When Sony sells games through its own store, it keeps all profits and subscription revenue, but has to give up to 30 percent on platforms like Steam.

Which Games Are Affected?

Game Status Future
Ghost of Yotei & Wolverine PC plans are fully cancelled; they will remain PlayStation 5 exclusives.
Live-Service Marathon and Marvel Tokon will still launch on PC to keep the player base large.
Third-Party Death Stranding 2 and Kena: Scars of Kosmora will continue to arrive on PC through special agreements.

Note: According to Bloomberg, development of the PC port for Sucker Punch’s new samurai game Ghost of Yotei was personally halted by upper management in recent weeks.

Industry Insight: “The Nintendo Strategy”

Analysts say Sony is moving away from Microsoft’s “play anywhere” model and returning to Nintendo’s “only on our hardware” approach. This move aims to keep the PlayStation community inside the console ecosystem and maximize digital sales and PS Plus subscriptions.
