Pinecove Grove blends Stardew Valley’s familiar farming loop with the tranquil wildlife discovery of Pokémon Snap.
Finding an indie game more beloved than Stardew Valley is nearly impossible; regardless of awards, sales, or player ratings, ConcernedApe’s classic has kept millions hooked for over a decade. But for those who feel they've done everything there is to do in Pelican Town, a new alternative is on the horizon: Pinecove Grove.
It’s clear that Pinecove Grove’s developer, Quality Time Studio, drew heavy inspiration from Stardew Valley. The art style, interface, character interactions, and farming mechanics all echo that iconic game. The top-down pixel art, tilling, planting, watering, character bonding, and exploration are all core elements shared by both Stardew Valley and Pinecove Grove.
However, there’s a key conceptual difference between the two: here, you’re not growing crops for profit. Instead, you’re building the perfect tree nursery to help restore the forest. The developer sums it up like this: “Rather than optimizing output and profit, you’ll focus on rebuilding the tree nursery and making a positive impact on the world around you. You’ll also solve puzzles, meet quirky characters, and experience heartwarming stories!”
This positive mission shapes the entire game, from character dynamics to exploration and even how you interact with wildlife. Players will discover and photograph a variety of animals in a peaceful, Pokémon Snap-inspired way, unlocking information about each one. In practice, this means you’ll be filling a wildlife catalog much like a Pokédex, with each entry unlocked by snapping a photo of that animal.
There’s no indication that Pinecove Grove includes romance, so don’t expect a Heart Events system like in Stardew Valley. But that doesn’t mean shallow characters. Quality Time Studio promises that you’ll help characters with their personal tasks and jobs. Through these moments, quiet conversations, and hangouts, you’ll uncover each NPC’s backstory—some of which may surprise you.
Pinecove Grove doesn’t have an official release date yet, but its Steam page is already live. Add it to your wishlist so you don’t miss the launch announcement. Considering that other anticipated Stardew Valley-like projects such as Haunted Chocolatier still don’t have a release window, Pinecove Grove stands out as a promising alternative to fill that cozy gaming gap.
