Microsoft Brings Xbox Backward Compatibility to PC

On July 22, Microsoft announced a new program called Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC. For the first time, this program lets you play classic original Xbox games on PC and handheld devices, including ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X. The program is now available in early access.
The First Four Games
The program launches with four classics: BliNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fusion Frenzy. These titles are now available for direct purchase on PC and are included with all Xbox Game Pass plans. If you already own these games digitally on console, you can play them on PC or handheld at no extra cost. Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming support are also available.
What's New
These re-released games come with enhanced graphics settings like up to 4x resolution scaling, VSync support, fullscreen and windowed modes, anisotropic filtering, and improved anti-aliasing. Jason Ronald, Xbox's Vice President of Next Generation, also stated that the team plans to add achievement support to select original Xbox games in the future, covering both console and PC versions.

The program requires Windows 11 to run. Microsoft has not made any statements regarding Windows 10 support.
Will More Games Be Added
Microsoft stated that more titles will be added over time, but has not yet shared an official list. Within the community, games like Far Cry Instincts, RalliSport Challenge 2, Project Gotham Racing, and Dino Crisis 3 are on many wishlists, but for now, these are just speculation.
Why the Timing Matters
This announcement comes right after a major wave of layoffs at Xbox and coincides with Sony’s decision to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation titles in 2028. Microsoft’s investment in game preservation is seen as a significant move toward digital preservation as the industry shifts away from physical media.
