A challenging period begins for EA and Battlefield Studios just before Season 2.
Battlefield 6 made a huge entrance as one of EA’s strongest FPS launches ever. But as of January 2026, the outlook isn’t so bright. Although the game initially hit 747 thousand concurrent players, it has lost 80% of its player base in recent weeks. So, why did the “Modern Battlefield is back” excitement turn into a flood of criticism?
The average review score on Steam has fallen from “Very Positive” to the “Mixed” zone. Only 53% of reviews from the past 30 days are positive. Here are the main complaints from players:
Aggressive Monetization: Even before entering the main menu, players are bombarded with Battle Pass ads in a $70 game, which has become a major frustration.
Generative AI Scandal: Players noticed that some cosmetics (like bizarre double-barrel M4A1 skins) were designed using unchecked AI-generated artwork. This move is seen as “a billion-dollar company selling low-quality content.”
Bugs and Performance: The 1.1.3.0 update brought stuttering issues and stealth nerfs to movement mechanics, pushing the community’s patience to its limits.
While Battlefield 6 is losing players, its competitors aren’t standing still. In particular, Arc Raiders—developed by Embark Studios, founded by former Battlefield developers—managed to overshadow Battlefield with 352 thousand concurrent players in January. Giants like Call of Duty and Battlefield are now struggling against fresh, player-friendly alternatives.
The criticism has become so intense that the main Reddit community (r/Battlefield) turned into a “complaint center,” prompting more positive-minded players to create a new subreddit called r/LowSodiumBattlefield. Still, the consensus is clear: the core gameplay is solid, but the business model and content management are falling short.
