At the main presentation during Gen Con 2026 on July 30, Wizards of the Coast unveiled the 2027 roadmap for Dungeons & Dragons. The headline announcement is the return to the iconic Dark Sun universe after 16 years, featuring the first-ever "Mature" (18+) rated sourcebooks in D&D history.
What Makes Dark Sun Unique
Dark Sun is set in Athas, a harsh desert world where magic has poisoned the land. The setting was first introduced in 1991 and last updated in 2010 during the fourth edition era. This time, Wizards is embracing the setting’s brutal and adult themes. Executive producer Greg Bilsland stated that the books contain blood, nudity, and mature themes, prompting legal teams to require shrink-wrapped packaging and warning labels.

Release Timeline
The Dark Sun content launches with the "Season of Survival" event running from February to July 2027. Exact release dates have not been announced, but these will be the first D&D products of 2027.
